Shooting Two Styles ? Who Else does it ?

Postby Steve_Barratt » Thu Jun 28, 2007 12:04 am

:archerysmilie: must admit to thinking that mixing two styles of archery disciplines and doing both well is very difficult. I love shooting my recurve but I find that when I shot my compound again , Have gone backwards lots.... :$

Think you need to settle on one style and do it. Or have fun and not be committed to anything special or very high scores. Bit hard for me I like to try to be competitive :duel:

Totally agree Steve. have tried to shoot my recurve from time to time at club level and find my compund form definately suffers. :archerysmilie:
Still a Scout.
I'm not trying to be difficult. It just comes naturally.

I think it is hard , in my opinion you need to compromise , or decide on one or the other .I even find going from Barebow compound to fsu a challenge

I was shooting BB Recurve and Freestyle limted recurve at the same time for about 20 weeks but my biggest trouble was trying to rember my gaps for BB so i just ended up going to freestyle limted recurve.

Gaps did not beat Instinctive (luck) in the IFAA Animal at the Nationals 2007.
I cannot explain it properly... I wish I could...

Following is the best explanation I can give...

Shooting a recurve apears to be more of an art than a science. When you start to shoot it well, it shoots you.
Then with practice, more practice, and even more practice, you discover how not to undermine the shot.
When it works, it just works, when it works...

Hi Steve,
I shoot both bowhunter recurve and bowhunter compound. I shoot the compound for IFAA as my poor bod cant handle so many arrows any more out of the recurve. But I enjoy shooting the recurve so use it for ABA.
I too go backwards on my recurve after having shot the compound for a bit. For me its 2 things. Firstly, I lose 'bow fitness' shooting the compound at 50lbs with 70%let off. I find it takes a bit of practice again to go back to 40lb recurve.
Secondly and this is the one I have the most problems with, is the compound shoots so much flatter than the recurve so my brain gets taught different 'instinctive gaps'. I dont gap with the recurve, but at IFAA, I gap the longer distances only.

If I want good scores, I believe I should only shoot one discipline, however, I enjoy my shooting too much to give up either.

Thanks for that Posty, it appears that everybody has the same issues if they have two styles. I had never thought about the reasons why so nice to hear what affects you :good:

At the moment the G3 appear to be the best Hoyt Limbs. It is all about how you shoot them.

Why the caveats...
I purchased a set of Border Limbs from a person who said they were crap...
I learn to shoot them and found them great. Shot them ‘till they broke...
Then the day before the worlds at Wide Bay an archer lent me a pair of FX to shoot, and I did OK.
I have a set of G3’s that I will shoot next year.

Remember, it is the Archer who hits the target, not the equipment...
Advice is cheap... Using it is the hard bit... :good:

I shoot both Recurve & Longbow - maybe not too well at longer ranges, but up to 30 yards (max. hunting distance) OK. I find 10 mins. on the practice range is enough to get my eye in again for the different bow, but I must admit I'm chasing maximum enjoyment out of the beautiful arc of the flying arrow into the target, rather than the best score. A hi score is nice, but the personal feeling of integrity I have when I've gone home a bit stretched out & tired at the end of the days shooting, & recalling in my mind's eye the flying, swirling, helically fletched, 5" feathered, 125 gr tipped 2016s or 2115s is far more memorable over the 400 I know I'll never record. The beautiful stretched out drawn recurve or longbow (with heavy woods) is a thing to cherish while I have the strength still to do.

Right with you Tim. It's hard to describe that feeling to the compound "arrow delivery system" shooters. :D

Is that what I'm doing wrong? I thought it only happened in cartoons! :P

For a while there i shot both barebow recurve and compound FSU. It seems that so far i am the only person who found that shooting 2 styles helped me. :hmm: I find that shooting recurve helps me in the consistency of my form, which aids me in my compound shooting. I have also found that shooting recurve helps with my distance judging. I often shoot both styles and dont have a problem with transition between the 2. Shooting 2 styles for me is more of a help than a hinderance.

i started archery shooting compound unsighted and using fingers but eventually moved up to a release aid and sights... eventually i decided that i had lost some of the passion from archery and it was mostly about scores so i went and bought a recurve... i found i thoroughly enjoyed shooting the curve but i to also found that shooting the different styles compromised the second style... if i shot the recurve for two long i lost my compound form and vice versa... but i would give up either style as with my compound i am far more confident hunting an its nice to know that i can constantly deliver a kill shot.... but that being said i would not give up the recurve as the experience is far better... i can get the same enjoyment i get hunting with the compound when im stump shooting with the recurve... with the recurve its all about the experience for me as you feel far more connected to the bow and it is all instinctive instead of it being a science.... oh well thats how i feel anyway....
