Recurve for ABA competition

Postby Journeyman » Sun Nov 21, 2010 12:05 pm

G'day Guys,

I want to shoot ABA competition with a Recurve (bowhunter/no sights).

I am reasonably advanced (I shoot Masters scores in Mens compound), so want to spec up a bow that will be competitive without spending a fortune for the "****" appeal.

I've been looking at the Hoyt Eclipse riser and the WinstarII, I am left-hand with a 31" draw length. I've also checked out the Hoyt GamemasterII as a complete package, I'm really unsure of recurve gear and would greatly appreciate some expert advice.

Its been ages since I have competed, so I havent had any opportunity to see what the good set-ups are on the range nowadays.

Cheers,

Rob.

with your draw length I would suggest that you stay away from the Gamemaster, as I am told it stacks up really bad at shorter draw lengths than yours. YOu don't need to spend a fortune to get a recurve that will be competative. I would suggest you try and speak with some of your fellow recurve shooters in your branch/club and get some ideas. An Eclipse riser will serve you well, and so will Winstar Liimbs. But I would suggest that you buy some reasonable/good quality limbs as these are the items that will let you down if you buy cheap stuff, especially at your draw length. IF your only competing with it in field/target rounds, make sure your setup is as long (tip to tip) as you can manage. Shot tip to tip will stack up heaps and you will not enjoy shooting.

I would suggest you PM Mrs Feral or Liam M on this site and ask some questions if you can't get information locally. There may also be other recurve shooters that can offer you some sound advice that also visit this site. Mrs Feral and Liam M are just two that I can recollect that shoot or have knowledge of recurve.

G'day Tony,

Thanks for the reply and the advice!

I ended up getting a K&P Winstar 25" Riser, and some KAP Carbon limbs (cheapies)...

I'm really looking forward to shooting this style of bow, its all a bit new to me and a refreshing change after many years shooting compounds.

Cheers,

Rob.
