Advice please

Postby Gig » Wed May 12, 2010 7:12 am

Hi there,

I have a 40lb max @ 28" York CNC compound bow in mint condition I used to shoot indoors with. My question is can I use this same bow to shoot 3D and Field and still be competitive with lots and lots of practice? Also I am thinking of either a prong or spring steel arrow rest to fit the above bow, simple is better for me, any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Gig.

Hi Gig, you don't say if you are shooting a release aid or not. If you are shooting with fingrs a prong rest is not recommended as it is designed to be used with a release aid and if not set up correctly may cause major damage if the arrow becomes caught between the prongs on release.
I would advise you find a good fingers rest, there are many simple set ups to choose from.
Shooting an older bow is no disadvantage as accuracy comes from the archer not the bow. Good luck.

To add to Lynne's reply you might have a problem with a bolt on arrow rest unless it is a screw in springy style as the cut out window of the York bow is smaller then the more modern bows and this restricts the center shoot of your bow. The rest that might have to be used is a stick on plastic rest or a screw in spring style as mentioned before.

Hi fellas,

Yes I will be using a release aid, not sure what type. Any suggestions please? . Currently the bow shoots fine with a plunger rest. I may as well leave that on and not touch what ain't broke. I have ordered a Sure Loc QC2 5 pin sight for my bow and hope to get a B - Stinger 8" or 10.25" Stab with 8 or 11 oz on the end soon to complete my bow for Bowhunter Unlimited. Any suggestions on arrows for the bow set at 40lbs for Field and 3D?

Thanks so much

Regards

Hi Gig,
The plunger rest you have now is designed to be shot with fingers. You will need to use a rest designed for use with a release aid such as a prong rest, a drop away rest or whisker biscuit style rest.
For arrows just google the eastern arrow selector and this will give you an indication of what arrows will be best for your set-up.

Thanks Mrs Feral,

Just for my own interest, what would be the effect of shooting this setup, plunger with a release aid ?

When you shoot a arrow with a release aid it flexes up and down. Hense the vertical support/clearance. With fingers it flexes sideways hence the cushion plunger support. You can shoot a finger rest set up with a release aid but you more than likely will have clearance problems and poor groups.
Still a Scout.
I'm not trying to be difficult. It just comes naturally.
