My New Recurve - First Impressions Down A New Path

Postby Liam M » Sun Aug 24, 2008 9:08 pm

Well as you may have guessed by the topic subject, I got my new recurve today...

After a little bit of waiting, i got the message during the week that my new bow had turned up. So, this morning i drove out to Avon, and sure enough i walked into the club house and in two neat little boxes was may new 25" Hoyt Helix Riser in a stunning Anodized Jade Green, and my 70" Hoyt G3 parabolic limbs.

After a quick crash course in setting up the Hoyt 'dove tail system' from Peter, i had my pretty new bow set up with its partners in crime - Sure-loc QuestX and Cartel Triple stabilisers (plus some other little gadgets).

It really is such an awesome bow! It has such a smooth draw and a dynamic shot reaction upon release. It is incredibly balanced and stable, and upon release slightly 'jumps' forward.

As far as hitting targets is going - I’m getting there. My new form I feel is pretty good to start, but it’s something I’m working really hard on with the help of coaches to get right and to get solid and concrete. Towards the end of the day I shot a few ends at 50M, and could put them in a noticeable group (slightly to the left - but I’m working on that). In the next few weeks I’ll be refining my form extensively and probably doing a bit of tuning on my machine. I'll keep you all updated :good:

I hate to brag, but it must be one of the sexiest bows around :P
I'll get some pics up ASAP in the next few days :ok:

Thanks heaps to Hunter Valley Archery Supplies and to Peter for your help.

Nice one Liam, Just a quick question the 70# limbs, are they 70 at your draw length?? If not what are they?? The other thing is there a poundage limit for FITA I thought compound was 60#!! Or does this tie in with the first question?

70# with your little arms would take some doing wouldn't it???  I don't know anyone shooting that poundage in a curve!

Look forward to seeing the photos

:O

70" (inch) not 70# (pound)
I should have been more specific - 70 Inches tip to tip

God help anyone that actually shoots 70 pounds on a recurve - that would just about kill me ;)

Sounds good liam, cant wait to see it! Did you guys give it a tune or just bung it together to get it running? In any event, youll have to give it a good thorough tune when you get your mitts on the correct arrows. So how are you finding that poundage (38 from memory?)?

When you get a moment, we can spend some time looking at arrows and what to get, gimme a yell whenever.

And obviously it cant be the sexiest bow ever, youve totally forgotten a certain blazin orange xforce :P

No way, they'll have to be eqaul first
I'll get some pics up ASAP :good:

As for the poundage - they are 30# (pound for smithy) but 34# at my draw  Im thinking though i might put it down a few turns just until i can get my bow arm sholder pushed down and out :hmm: but thats something im working on.

Nope it hasn't had a tune as of yet, i might not even do it until i get my new arrows seems how i might have them by the end o f next week. Besides, i'd like the get my form down first and then tuning.

A lot of arches might think that tuning of your bow is more important than form, Liam I recon you need good form to tune a bow especially a recurve, as if you are not consistent then your arrow flight will be eratic, how can you tune any bow when the archer is at fault not the equipment ?

Well done Liam sounds very sweet indeed :good: and I look forward to seeing some pictures :smile2:

Sounds nice gear Liam. Looking forward to hearing how you go with it.

Are you going to be able to get 90 metres as required for FITA target out of the limbs?

Well, at the moment (for the next week) im just using some X7's that are about an inch too long and have 100 grain tips.
The furthest ive shot it so far with them is at 50m, by the looks of things on my sight bar, i'll get 70m maybe a bit more out of those arrows (and they are soooo heavy).
By the end of next week or so, i should have a dozen brand new ACE's with 90 grain tips - i think i'll manage to get my meters out of them :ok:

Indeedy. Ive always been of the belief that you can only ever tune gear as good as you can shoot, and you can only ever shoot as good as your gear allows you.

So what spine did you select of the ACE's liam?

Well the question will have to be accompianed by an idea of what poundage youd like to max out on on these limbs. A whole new set of limbs will probably demand a new set of arrows to match.

ACE's are a big splash for a bow thatll probably be turned up in the poundage over the next year. Might i suggest looking at the navigators, theyd make a terrific recurve FITA / IFAA arrow. Nice and thin, a good weight and a price that doesnt make people think youre mad.

Great Liam

ACE's are a good choice for the 90m effort, Liam, and a lot cheaper than X10s, although I think the X10 is a superior arrow to the ACE in the recurve (and a lot more expensive).

I will be interested to hear how they go with your set up
