Deciding to Change Style ?

Postby Steve_Barratt » Sun May 15, 2011 5:00 pm

Many archers after shooting a specific division/style decide for many and varied reasons to change to a different division/style after many years. I would like to know why we do it? I am sure for some it is to put the fun back into their archery for others it is something they want to do to try all the various styles/divisions so they can hopefully find something they like (maybe even better at one style than the other)

Sometimes our initial thoughts are based on what others at our club shoot, the competition that we will have at Branch Shoots or simply what our budget will allow.

So how many people have change style and what were the reasons ?

Would like to know how many people have done this just to see the reasons why

Seen a few compounders go to longbow.
I think its just 'cause they couldn't hit anything so now they have an excuse...lol.
Out hunting rubber cows.

I changed to keep in the sport, I had the black dog reL bad and it was either try something else or give up , the was no way I was going to stop shooting , so I went back to my roots and where it all started and am shooting bowhunters style with my compound.

I have also just ordered a recurve to have a try as well

Got tired of carrying around a lump of metal, so I changed to shooting a longbow - nice and light, and so many other things you can use it for. Also, not a lot of competition in ABA barebow or IFAA bowhunter compound in Branch F and I couldn't see myself going to sights and release aid.

Changed to a longbow a while back for a bit of fun. But for those who saw me shoot :$ know exactly why I changed right back to compound.
Might give it another go now that we are home for awhile.

Must be why I changed to longbow.
A wise man once said" most archers are just fisherman in training".

I'm not trying to be difficult. It just comes naturally.

One thing I miss about shooting Sights , and taking up bowhunter style , is that there are less things to spend money on and try . I miss looking at the shops at all the bright and shiny bits and pieces

I have shot many different styles for several different reasons. I started with BB Compund and found it difficult as I do not have an instinctive bone in my body and I found gap shooting difficult to understand, so to keep me in the sport Peter put fixed pins on the bow. I then moved to a release aid and then freestyle ulimited. I bought a new compound at one stage and while I was waiting for it to arrive from the US I started shooting longbow. I enjoyed it's simplicity but when my new compound arrived I went back to Freestyle unlimited. At the WFAC in 2006 I had target panic really bad and nearly gave the sport away. I bought a new compound and release aid and this helped my recover from the target panic. A few years ago I developed tennis elbow and pain in my shoulders. I could no longer pull my compound back without pain. I sold the compound and bought an areotech recurve which I shoot freestyle limited. I have shot this for a few years now when I have actually been shooting. I have another compound now and I am slowly getting back into Freestyle unlimited. My tennis elbow etc has been cured but the old target panic has still got a slight hold so I am taking it slowly .
I am glad I have experienced so many different styles as I feel I have a good understanding of each style. This has been very helpful with my coaching.
